PROJECT OVERVIEW

5

Step paperless onboarding

1

App for payments, settlements and loans

3

Settlement views (settled, pending, on hold)

THE CHALLENGE

WhatsApp messaging gets complicated at scale.

The client had a strong network of local retailers but no single digital channel to onboard them, collect payments for them, and offer them credit. Onboarding depended on paper forms and branch visits, so activation took days and many applications stalled halfway. Once live, merchants had little visibility into their money: they could not easily see which payments had been settled to their bank, which were still pending, or why some were on hold. On top of that, the client wanted merchants to act as a distribution channel for loans and other products, but there was no simple way for a shopkeeper to refer a customer, track that lead, and get paid for it.

Challenge 1

Paper-based KYC and document collection slowed merchant activation and caused high drop-off

Challenge 2

No way for a merchant to pause an application and resume it later without starting again

Challenge 3

Limited visibility into transactions, settlements and payouts led to frequent support calls

Challenge 4

Business credit was offered through separate channels, disconnected from the merchant's payment history

Challenge 5

No structured, trackable referral process for merchants selling financial products to their customers

Challenge 6

Support queries were handled over phone, with no ticket history or status tracking

Measurable Impact
5Step paperless onboarding with instant PAN, GST and bank verification

3Settlement views: settled, pending and on hold
3Downloadable business reports: QR transactions, leads and payouts
2Onboarding modes: self-serve and employee-assisted
WHAT WE LEARNED
01

Breaking KYC into short, resumable steps with auto-filled data does more for completion rates than any single design tweak

02

Clear settlement status is the feature merchants value most, because it answers the question they ask every day

03

Credit offers work best when they appear inside the tool merchants already use to run their business

04

Referral programs build trust when consent, lead status and commissions are visible at every stage

05

Supporting both self-serve and assisted onboarding in one app lets a business grow digitally without losing its field relationships

Project Goals

Build a fully digital, mobile-first merchant onboarding journey with instant PAN, GST and bank verification
Give merchants a live, easy-to-read view of QR payments, settlements and refunds
Bring business loans and credit offers directly into the merchant's daily workflow
Turn merchants into a trackable referral channel with transparent earnings and payouts
Support both self-serve and employee-assisted onboarding without separate apps
Keep every account secure with strong login, device checks and clear consent controls

The Outcome

We built a merchant app for a large Indian financial services group that wanted to serve small and mid-sized retailers through a single mobile experience. Merchants sign up and complete KYC on their phone, get a live QR code, watch every payment and settlement as it happens, apply for business loans, and earn commissions by referring financial products to their own customers. Field employees can also assist merchants through the same journey, so the app works for both self-serve and assisted onboarding. The result is one app that covers onboarding, QR payments, settlements, credit and referral income for the client's entire retailer network.

Conclusion & Impact

"This project showed that small merchants will fully adopt a digital financial product when it is simple, transparent and useful every day. By bringing onboarding, payments, settlements, credit and referral income into a single app, we helped the client turn its retailer network into an active, digitally served community and a scalable distribution channel for financial products."
